Apple Crisp
A warm, comforting dessert made from baked apples topped with a crispy, crumbly mixture of butter, sugar, flour, and oats.
Ingredients:
For the Streusel :
2 sticks unsalted butter, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ teaspoon almond extract
2½ cups all-purpose flour
¾ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup light brown sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
For the Filling:
4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
12 cups mixed apples, peeled and chopped into bite-sized pieces
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
½ cup granulated sugar
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350°F
To make the streusel topping, combine the melted butter, vanilla extract, and almond extract in a small bowl. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the flour, sugars, salt, and nutmeg. Pour the melted butter mixture into the flour mixture. Mix with a fork until completely blended. Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the apple filling
Add the lemon juice to a large bowl. As you peel and chop the apples, add them to the bowl of lemon juice. Add the 4 tablespoons melted butter and toss. In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt.
Step 3: Stir
Pour this flour mixture into the bowl of apples. Stir, coating the apples evenly in the butter and flour mixture. Butter an 13 x 9-inch pan. Pour the apple filling into the pan.
Step 4: Bake
Crumble the streusel mixture in an even layer over the apple filling. Bake for 40-45 minutes.
Notes:
Top warm crisp with vanilla ice cream or freshly whipped cream.
